Lucy Dacus is wearing a fisherman hat at the restaurant, which evokes a Platonic Dad: some oblivious patriarch who cares more about function than fashion; who wears an ancient pair of grass-stained jean shorts; and whose idea of comfort food is grilled halibut and coconut rice. She and Baker share anecdotes about absurd fan encounters: sometimes they’re stopped midrun, Bridgers is greeted as she reads on a bench (she admits to not standing up for photos), and Dacus was once approached by a group of kids who asked her to sing “I Don’t Wanna Be Funny Anymore.”
Home Video finds her unafraid to take on the big questions—the life-or-death reckonings that feel like they are, at least. It’s an album full of bracing realizations, tearful declarations and moments of hard-won peace expressed in lyrics destined for yearbook quotes and first tattoos. In a live setting, these songs are a balm. And the energy they generate is palpable, even in a sold-out Music Hall of Williamsburg.
